I’ve been natural since ’94, before You Tube tutorials, before the thousands of web sites geared towards natural hair and even before there were a quarter of a billion products (most of which aren’t natural) hit the market. I’ve seen and heard every word of advice given to women before they’ve done the ‘big chop’ after they’ve done the ‘big chop’. I’ve seen people ‘teach’ others on how to maintain their natural hair and everything thing else under the sun pertaining to natural hair.
When I’ve thought I’ve seen and heard it all, I notice my friend “RyceJuanton” tweet this:

So being the nosy inquisitive person that I am, I did the first thing that came to my mind…I headed to the good ole Google. That’s when I sat in my office and couldn’t help but to literally Laugh Out Loud. Well I’ll be damned, there is now a “sorority” (I use the term lightly) called Pi Nappa Kappa. I’m going to assume the “Nappa” is a play on “Nappy”, but to me the whole concept is a play on stupid.
So I’m going to assume this is where the nappier holier than though Natural Hair Nazis, pledge their nappiness. According to their “pledge” site, it states:
More details
Pi Nappa Kappa Natural Hair Sorority is dedicated to the advancement of natural hair knowledge, preservation and the development of integrity.
In order to thrive and excel, this natural hair community must preserve the freedom of thought and expression of all its members. A culture of respect that honors the rights, safety, dignity and worth of every individual is essential to preserve such freedom.
By choosing to be members of this natural hair sorority, we pledge our respect for the standards of the
Sorority and for the rights and well-being of all its natural members.
As a member of the Pi Nappa Kappa Natural Hair Sorority, I pledge that:
1. I am a smart, special, valuable person!
2. I respect myself and I respect others.
3. My words and actions are kind and honest.
4. I will respect the dignity and essential worth of all individuals.
5.I will promote the diversity of opinions, ideas, hairstyles and backgrounds which is the lifeblood of the sorority.
6. I will promote a culture of respect throughout the natural hair community.
7. I will not tolerate bigotry, discrimination, violence, or intimidation of any kind.
8. I will practice personal integrity and expect it from others.
9. I will always be proud of my natural born hair.
10. I accept only my best in all I do.
I am PROUD to be ME!
Seriously, is there a Relaxer/Chemically treated sorority out there also?
I have tons of friends, well just about all of them, that have been natural for decades, and never have I heard of such craziness. Sure, be proud of your natural hair, exalt in it as a matter of fact because it can be a beautiful thing, but…
…and this is a big BUT….
Isn’t it a bit much to create a “sorority“?
Imagine if it was a real sorority, what would their intake process consist of?
Coming up with the best natural hair products? Making the best two strand twist out? Reciting the ingredients to a jar of relaxer?
Will there be a comb test? If your hair can get through a fine tough comb, will you not be allowed?
Anyways, I’ll just sit around and wait for the “Lye Phi Lye” sorority to pop up, just so those that live for the creamy crack can have something to call their own as well, why should the “naturalistas” at Pi Nappa Kappa- The Natural Hair Sorority have all the fun?
* Before all of yall happy to be nappy nazis get your panties in a bunch and get ready to type 100wpm in the comment section..you’ve missed the 48hr comment period..no new ones will be approved

i mean really, c’mon! we were BORN with our natural hair! do we really need to have all of this hype over something that we’ve had all along? if you choose to become natural after a relaxer, weave, wig or whatever, great, but is it earth shattering or an honor badge? no. there are PLENTY of sisters that have been natural forever. or have switched back and forth, me included. i don’t feel like i have to have a press conference over it one way or the other….it’s just hair and a personal choice.

I am natural and proud to be nappy but I think a natural sorority is too much. It is comical. What if you decide to press your hair one day or god forbid perm it, are you then kicked out of the Natural Hair Sorority? I do not believe that the way in which people wear their hair should be used as a measure of their blackness. While there are times when this definitely applies there are other times when this is not the case. It took some growing for me to get to this point but black hair politics is complex. I am not a sorority person so I am not really in support of this silliness.
By Chile bye!!, August 31, 2011 at 6:28 am
I just can’t with thus foolishness. First. Nappa isn’t even in the Greek alphabet. Second– this ‘sorority’ is a bit much. Hand signs – calls and the fact that they call each other soror…… SMH

some people have too much time on their respective hands…Nappa? Isn’t that a store for car parts? I smell a lawsuit coming…Ha!
I’ma start a frat with dudes that have bushy beards like myself (a la Rick Ross), what should I call it??? I’ll wait…NOT! LOL!

I for one see no harm in this group using the word sorority having been apart of one for the last 4 years. I think that we so used to categorizing sororities with what we’ve known for so many years that as soon as something else comes around we detest it. I cam from a school where the word phi was put on everything: Tree Phi Tree (hanging out by a particular tree), Cheer Phi Cheer (Cheerleaders), hell even the gospel choir had phi or some Greek reference to it and never saw a problem in it. It was a group of people getting together and as group either bonding or partying. If you go to their page, they’re all going to a natural hair show and want to be united when they get there (hence the costs of shirts and even to be apart of the group). I belong to a group of natural sisters in Miami and they’re planning a cruise and it consists of natural women. I think it’s cool maybe even uplifting for sisters who have made the decision to become natural and many people consider that to be a drastic decision. Some people get encouragement from a fortune cookie other by starting a group based upon one goal and calling it a sorority. GEESH!!!!

I dont see it as silly or problematic. If you don’t like it don’t join. For me personally, one sorority experience was way more than enough for one lifetime. LOL.
By Yesha Callahan, August 30, 2011 at 11:51 am
if only life was as simple as “if you don’t like it join”…if people went about that same way when it came to expressing opinions..we would be in an opinion-less society…

Hey, its positive and perhaps it uplifts someone in need of making such a connection with others. It may not be for you, but really…what’s the harm??
By Yesha Callahan, August 30, 2011 at 11:51 am
the harm is in referring to it as a ‘sorority’..then actually charging people for an event online…
By permy, August 29, 2011 at 6:54 pm
Pi Nappa Kappa? I don’t understand the usage of greek letters. Why not Natural Sisters or something along along those lines.. A sisterhood does not have greek letters.
By Yesha Callahan, August 30, 2011 at 11:52 am
LOL @ permy
who knows….to top it off..’nappa’?
By MzSufi, August 29, 2011 at 6:01 pm
I am happily nappy and I have been that way since age 17, in 1970. Kind of reminds me of Wine Psi Phi back in the day. Seems as if many want to belong to a fraternal a group, then again there was Nu Lambda Bama back then, too. It was all fun and games. No one took these groups too seriously. SMH

Its so humiliating and embarrasing. First off… nappa?????!!! Wth? I’m one pissed natural. Its sad… there are enough forums to join and be apart of… why this? Someone must have lost their minds. Be careful who you follow. Some people are just down right psychotic. I love my natural hair…. its me… I “celebrate” it by just being me!!! Omg people r obsessed with their hair its ridiculous and vain.
By heavenleiblu, August 29, 2011 at 5:42 pm
I’m so over nattural hair, I swear. Maybe I’m spoiled because there’s a 50/50 split between naturals and non-naturals here… I don’t have the mental space to be that concerned about hair when I’m not getting paid to do so, LOL
By Natural Naysayer, August 29, 2011 at 4:15 pm
@Ced…there are natural women in every Greek lettered organization that Black women can join (which is more than just AKA, Delta, Zeta, and SGRho) so that’s not valid…
@Thy…you can bond without creating a “sorority”. The organizational structure and function of a sorority is not one based on how your hair grows or how you style it. If there was a Lacefront “sorority” everyone would have jokes. Just because i support (and have!) natural hair doesn’t mean i have to silently look at dumb shit like this exploit and pimp the identity of what it means to be a member of a viable 501(c)3 organization with fraternal aspects.
@Anon…I’m with you.

“Seriously, is there a Relaxer/Chemically treated sorority out there also?”
Yeh, all of them.
By Yesha Callahan, August 29, 2011 at 5:05 pm
sororities consist of all types of women..natural…chemically relaxed…etc…
By Thy, August 29, 2011 at 3:14 pm
I see nothing wrong with it, It’s great to see sisters bond together over natural hair, it should be celebrated more!
By Anon, August 29, 2011 at 3:41 pm
This is the craziest shit I’ve ever heard of…
